//Great British Sewing Bee 2019 – First Episode – Cottons, Denims, Wiggle Dresses, Jumpsuits & Some Special GBSB Offers!

It was definitely worth waiting for! We loved the first episode of the new Great British Sewing Bee and are sure we are going to be in for a very exciting competition as the standard of the contestants is so high.

This week’s episode was all about cotton fabrics. Cotton  is a very popular dressmaking fabric for many reasons. Firstly, it is easy to care for. Secondly, this fabric ‘breathes’ so is comfortable in hot, humid weather. As the body perspires, the fibres absorb the moisture and release it on the surface of the fabric, so it evaporates. Finally, in cold weather, if the fabric remains dry, the fibers retain body heat so keeping the wearer warm.

Dragonfly Fabrics have a great selection of cotton lawns and cotton poplins in some beautiful prints, some of which you can see below:

You can browse the whole cotton lawn and cotton poplin range  HERE

GBSB SPECIAL OFFER: 10% off all COTTON LAWNS & COTTON POPLINS using the code SEWINGBEE10.

There is also free postage automatically applied if your order is over £30.

The transformation challenge was based on transforming denim items. Denim is, of course, a strong, durable cotton fabric. If you haven’t got a stash of old denim jeans and garments to raid, have a look at our lovely range of denim fabrics – both stretch and non-stretch and in a range of colours.  Have a look at the range HERE

The pattern challenge was to make a close-fitting ‘wiggle dress’. If you would like to make something similar then we suggest the following patterns:

The Named Agate Pencil Dress

For fabric we would suggest our stretch cotton poplins – choose from three different floral prints or our attractive Navy Anchors print.

Another option is our stretch Rio Crepe fabric – we particularly love this luscious purple shade!

The made to measure challenge this week was to create a jumpsuit. This proved to be quite a challenging garment to sew, and it was difficult to get a perfect fit and avoid the dreaded ‘camel toe’ or the ‘hungry bottom’!

Any of our cotton lawns would be perfect for these designs, but we particularly like Dakota, Fleur Japonais, Midnight Rosette and Japanese Garden which are illustrated further up the page. Or you could go for a lovely denim, perhaps our pretty pink washed stretch denim or the ochre denim which was used in the programme.

We loved Juliet’s jumpsuit and felt was a deserving winner of garment of the week with its asymmetric off-the-shoulder look and contrasting patterns.  But we were sad to see Tom leave, having had a couple of pattern-matching disasters!

Next week’s episode can’t come quick enough!  We hope you enjoy making some of the projects from the show!
