Create a super stylish elasticated hem on your pyjama bottoms with our latest tutorial.
You can never have too many pairs of pyjama bottoms, especially when they’re sewn out of such gorgeous fabrics! I have created endless pairs of The Avid Seamstress Pyjama Bottoms ever since I discovered the fabulous pattern – they’re a really quick and easy make that can be completed in an afternoon, plus they’re super comfortable and stylish too. What’s not to love about that?!
I decided to use our stunning Art Gallery Fabrics Wandering With Bear Flannel for this sewing project – it is made from 100% premium double brushed cotton flannel and is Oeko-Tex certified, so you can rest assured it’s created without compromising the planet. This flannel fabric and The Avid Seamstress Pyjama Bottoms truly are a match made in heaven!
Seeing as I have so many pairs of these fabulous pyjamas, I thought it was time to give them a little pattern hack and add an elasticated hem. This is a super easy pattern hack to create and looks really effective too! Follow my step-by-step guide below to learn how to recreate this look.
Let’s get stitching!
Begin by turning your fabric up a few millimetres more than the width of your elastic and press in place.
You may wish to turn your fabric over twice to conceal the raw edge.
Next, stitch close to the open edge ensuring you leave a gap in order to feed the elastic through later on.
Attach a safety pin or bodkin to your elastic. This will allow you to easy feed the elastic through the gap.
It’s now time to thread your elastic through the gap.
Next, sew both elastic ends together secure in place.
To finish, sew the gap shut on your sewing machine.
And just like that, you’ve got a super cute elasticated hem on your pyjama bottoms!
I hope this has inspired you to create your own elasticated hem.
